Why do I have flies?

Flies can be a good indication of a sanitary problem, they can also spread disease and some may even lay eggs on food. Flies present in your home or business could mean you have very ripe fruit, rotting fruit, over watered plants, leaks present or even drains that need cleaning. Flies are unwanted in your home or business, but can be a source of information for problems that you’re unaware of.

Fruit Flies

Fruit Flies are attracted to very ripe or rotting fruit, they can also be brought in on fresh fruit from the market.  They will also feed on the organic matter in your drains, which can be prevented by cleaning your drains. Fruit Flies are often found in bars and as well because of the fruit that sits out, the soda dispensers as well as liquor bottles.

Fungus Gnats

Fungus Gnats are often confused for Fruit Flies and even Drain Flies.  Since Fungus Gnats like to infest soil and other decomposing organic matter, seeing them in your home or business is a good indication that plants are being over watered. Adult Fungus Gnats do not bite nor damage plants, their larvae however feed on fungus and decomposing matter, they will also chew on plant roots.

Drain Flies

Drain flies can be found anywhere drains are present, they feed on sewage and organic matter. They can also be found outside in storm drains as well as decomposing logs. Drain Flies do not bite and are simply a nuisance, treating for these flies requires getting rid of their food source and cleaning drains!
